Momo

In 1973 came a book that is as important today as it was back then. It was a book that I read growing up, and it is about Momo who save the world from The Men in Gray who has started the Timesavings Bank. It is a story about important topics within every persons lives and how we live our life. Michael Ende was a German children book writer, who wrote great adventures often with an important agenda, among them The Never Ending story. If you read this book, think of how the world has changed…. Who among us is The Men in Gray….

About Momo on Wikipedia.

A mouse in the forest…

Mouse

The story of this mouse is one that was written a long time ago. I have always wanted to make it into a little book with nice chapters and some full page illustrations. Now I have started to look into it again, and maybe it will be a book sometime in the future. Here is one small illustration test to find out how this main figure in the story is going to look.

Earlier this year I did illustrations for this fairy tale book that now is out in the shops here in Norway. It is a collection of 20 short stories, some well known stories and others less known stories from some of the greatest authors within Norwegian children literature. I did illustrations for one of the stories that not was illustrated before. The story is “Myggene og læreren” by Alf Prøysen, one of the big children book author and song composer in Norwegian history. Here on top you see the sketch for the full A4 page illustration. This was the sketch that later on was painted in watercolor for the book called “Bestemors eventyr bok om dyra” (Grandmothers fairy tale book about the animals.)

In Norwegian children book literature history there is three authors who stands out. The three was Alf Prøysen, Anne-Cath. Vestly and Torbjørn Egener. I think that there stamp upon the children literature in Norway will stand for a long time. What they did for children in Norway was to lift the culture up so that everyone felt related to there stories and dreams. They was also a well known voice in the radio. In Lørdagsbarnetimen (Saturday Children Hour – radioshow) the oldest radio show that still is broadcasting (started in 1924). There stories got everyone to gather around the radio to listen to the good stories and songs they made.

MistgriM – a close look.

A close look at a MistgriM page.

The first of the MistgriM pages has been scanned into the computer using a scanner that has been modified/rebuild to scan large drawings. Every page holds lots of small details. In the two pages you see a detail from here there is more than 30 figures of different kind. All the pages are going to hold this level of detail. I am soon going back to do work on MistgriM after having done illustration work for others.

In the Mist

In the Mist is a short film that is set in the same world as the picture book MistgriM, but has a different story. Here you see a animation background that is made for it, and the additional images shows how this is going to look with the figure in it. The background is made as one illustration, and then the foreground elements is cut out to place the figure inside. The animation itself will be done like classical cartoon, with hand drawn figures.

If you want to know more about this animation project, then you can take a look at the project pages on Jinglepaper Studio website.

The Junglebook by Joseph Rudyard Kipling

My version of the Junglebook

The Junglebook was published in 1894 with a second book the year later. They contained short stories about a boy who lived with the animals in the jungle of India. The writer Joseph Rudyard Kipling was born there in 1865. The short stories is made for children, but are also more than just fun stories. When I was studying anthropology at the University in Bergen they told about how Kipling was using the stories in The Junglebook to tell about how life in India was. The stories about Mowgli tells about how the society in India is build up, relations and how different groups live and work with each other. Kipling wrote both children books, and he also worked within other fields of writing, and in 1907 he did get the Nobel Prize for Literature. Read more about Kiplings life here.

My Junglebook illustration made in 2006

Les mer om Kipling sitt liv her.
